Hailing from Erie Pennsylvania, freelance graphic designer “Monster” Mark Kosobucki has a monstrous design style that is all his own. As a part of our design community for over 3 years, this creative had a recent win in our KISS Animals design contest and was hand selected by the band as a weekly winner!
“KISS was one of the first bands I ever listened to. My best friend Steve introduced them to me in fifth grade and I’ve been a fan ever since!”
We sat down with Mark to find out more about his art & hopes for future contests.
When do you first remember getting into design?
I took a lot of art classes in school and studied it in college but I’ve been drawing since I was little.
How did you develop your style?
I used to copy from Batman comics when I was a kid and I guess that comic book style just kind of stuck with me.
Where do you pull your inspiration from?
I try to surround myself with things that make me happy. Comic books and science fiction stuff from the 50s & 60s keep me entertained and always thinking. And LOTS of music.
How do you start your process for working on a piece?
I begin with rough gesture sketches in colored pencil to layout my concept. Then I’ll do the actual illustration/illustrations in pencil and then inking.
Tell us about your KISS design.
I tried to pick an animal that would lend itself to their face paint; a white tiger has black markings on a white face so matching up the KISS paint was easier to work in.
What kind of contests would you be really excited to see?
I love cover art / poster or t-shirt contests for bands. I’ll jump at most contests that involve that as long as my style will lend itself to the genre of music or band.
In addition, I’d love to do something for Iron Maiden, The Damned, or The Misfits. I’m also a huge Mad Magazine fan so if there was ever a contest for something with Alfred E. Neuman, I’d drop whatever I’m doing to enter!
