We have wrapped up 2017 and it’s time to reflect upon the great year that country music had. From the record breaking success of Sam Hunt’s “Body Like A Back Road” to continued success from acts like Chris Stapleton, Little Big Town, and Dierks Bentley, the future looks bright for the once forgotten genre.
In selecting what I thought were the best country singles of the year, I tried to pick from an amazing group of releases from some of country’s top veteran performers, as well as some newcomers who made their initial mark on the musical landscape. See my list below and tell me if you agree or disagree!
5. Midland – Drinkin’ Problem
The Grammy-nominated debut single from Midland was a song few thought would break the Top 40, let alone reach No. 1. It’s a throwback with no qualifier needed and works because it’s so honest and also because it stands out like a rose in a field of dandelions.
4. LANCO – Greatest Love Story
I’m going to be honest with all of you. There were so many great country songs in 2017, that it was hard for me to pick. I enlisted the help of my BEST FRIEND, asking for advice on what song should make my list and her top recommendation was “Greatest Love Story”. We’ve all had relationships where you’re with someone and then you decide to spend some time apart. This specific song really hits home for me, starting with the first few lines of the song (‘They said I was nothing but a troublemaker / Never up to no good / You were the perfect all American girl / Wouldn’t touch me even if you could’). It’s a story of two people getting together, then separating and realizing through that separation that what they needed in life was each other.
3. Thomas Rhett – Unforgettable
The song is about a guy basically telling the girl that he loves, “I remember everything about the night that I met you. I remember what you were drinking, what you were wearing, what you smelled like, what the environment was like.” A lot of the time, I think us guys get a bad rap for not remembering the small things. But if you can remember details of the night you fell in love with somebody, I think a girl would really like to hear that. I can relate so that is why this song made the list!
2. Dierks Bentley – Different For Girls
Okay – so I cheated a little. Dierks is my favorite artist but this is my list and this song is one of MY favorites. This collaboration with Elle King from Black is among Bentley’s more mature moments, showing the differences that men and women show in the dealing of a broken heart. The song should have led to a few awards, as Bentley raised his music game but don’t get me started on that. #GrammySnub
1. Sam Hunt – Body Like A Back Road
“Body Like a Back Road” is not only the song that captured country radio over the summer but it’s a record-breaking hit single that has smashed ALL previous records. This song has stayed at No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart for 34 consecutive weeks as well as topping the Country Airplay chart. It crossed over into the mainstream Billboard Hot 100, going all the way to No. 6, and has sold more than three million total units.
